Minister of Energy reaffirms the UAE’s commitment to adopting clean energy and supporting the Paris Agreement

His Excellency Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, affirmed the UAE’s commitment to adopting clean energy, following a cooperative approach to confront global challenges, and advancing sustainable development.

The UAE aspires to be a role model in the ambitious and practical transition to clean energy sources, while it is keen to continue meeting current global energy needs and investing in future energy systems, explaining that the energy sector in the UAE has witnessed great developments.

The UAE Energy Strategy 2050 was recently updated, which set ambitious goals for the year 2030, including tripling the contribution of renewable energy to the energy mix, increasing the energy efficiency of individuals and companies up to 45%, raising the contribution of clean energy to 32% of the energy mix, and achieving a rate Grid emissions of 0.27 kg CO2/kWh by 2030.

His Excellency explained that accelerating the hydrogen economy has become a top priority on the global agenda, and said that the UAE has launched the National Hydrogen Strategy with the aim of becoming a leading producer and exporter of low-carbon hydrogen by 2031.

The UAE aims to produce 1.4 million tons of low-emission hydrogen annually by 2031, of which 71.4% is green hydrogen. By 2050, it also aims to increase production tenfold to reach 15 million tons annually.

In confirmation of the UAE’s commitment to a low-carbon future; His Excellency stated that the country joined the Global Biofuel Alliance, which was established by India, the United Kingdom and the United States of America with the aim of developing and promoting the use of sustainable biofuels.

He pointed out that the UAE is investing heavily in biofuels as part of its efforts to diversify the energy mix and reduce the carbon footprint, and that the country has many waste-to-energy plants, whether in operation or development, that work to provide clean energy, reduce emissions, and divert waste from landfills. Serious steps are being taken to use biofuels as a clean alternative fuel for aviation.
