ECSSR: Abdul Latif Al-Zayani: “GCC is a successful model for regional cooperation in facing challenges”
His Excellency Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Secretary-General of the Cooperation Council for the Gulf Arab countries, delivered a lecture on Wednesday 15 January 2020 at the Sheikh Zayed Hall at the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research in Abu Dhabi.
The lecture was attended by a large number of audiences headed by Dr. Jamal Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Center, and Lieutenant General Dhahi Khalfan, Deputy Chief of Police and Public Security In Dubai, Rashid al-Nuaimi, a former foreign minister, and ambassadors from the GCC countries to the UAE, and a group of diplomats, thinkers, academics and researchers.
Dr. Al-Zayani praised the experience of the GCC, which presented to the region and the world one of the most important regional groupings that managed its affairs with a high degree of efficiency amid successive currents and challenges, tracing the effects and principles of great men, headed by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God bless him, who had great credit In founding the council.
His Excellency pointed out that the primary goal of the Council is to achieve coordination, complementarity and interdependence between member states in all fields to reach their unity, as well as facing the challenges facing them starting from terrorism and combating it and the crises experienced by some countries in the region, combating organized crime, and supporting efforts to disarm and destroy weapons of mass destruction and prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons in the region, in addition to the caring of the environmental factor, which is the focus of attention of the leaders of the Gulf states.
In his speech, Dr. Al-Zayani discussed the strategic goals of the council, which is to achieve security in its comprehensive sense, maintain economic growth in the GCC states, work to diversify sources of income, human development, provide education and work opportunities, enhance the international standing of the Cooperation Council, provide peace and stability in the Gulf region, and deal with crises, Increasing the volume of investments in the GCC countries, and the completion of the customs union project among the cooperation countries during the current year.
His Excellency also presented the achievements of the Council, the most important of which is increasing the volume of intra-regional trade, doubling the movement of citizens of the GCC countries among member states, and achieving electrical linkage between the GCC countries.
