A few days ago, as part of its goals to decarbonize industry and diversify national power generation, Qatar Energy announced plans for a new 2 gigawatt solar project, a further step on the path to increasing solar installed capacity to 30% of installed capacity by 2030.
The solar photovoltaic power plant will be located in the Dukhan area on the western side of the peninsula. Dukhan is home to Qatar Energy’s 176,000 barrels per day Dukhan oil field, which produces Qatar’s premium export crude.
“The development of solar power plants is one of Qatar’s most important initiatives to reduce carbon emissions, develop sustainability projects and diversify electricity production,” said Saad Al-Kaabi, CEO of Qatar Energy and Minister of Energy.
