Libya: Oil production resumes at Sinawen field after more than three years

Arabian Gulf Oil Company (AGOCO) announced the resumption of crude oil production at the Sinawen oil field, located in the Nalut region of western Libya, after a hiatus of over three years and seven months. According to a statement released on its official channels, the hiatus—which began in 2022—was due to financial and technical difficulties related to shipping operations via the 16-inch pipeline connecting the field to the Mellitah industrial complex, a strategic hub for crude oil and gas exports to international markets. The resumption occurred following the completion of maintenance and restoration work conducted by the company’s technical and engineering teams, which specifically focused on removing operational bottlenecks along the export line. Pumping operations to Mellitah have resumed gradually, in compliance with safety and operational efficiency standards, the company stated.

The field’s restart is part of the National Oil Corporation’s (NOC) broader strategy to increase and stabilize production levels, reactivating previously idle fields, and strengthening the sector’s overall operating capacity. The company emphasized that the initiative contributes to supporting state revenues and consolidating the oil industry’s role as a pillar of the national economy. The Sinawen field was officially inaugurated in October 2020 and is considered one of the projects supporting the western region’s energy infrastructure. Its production represents an additional contribution to the country’s overall capacity, which in recent months has aimed to maintain production at around 1,3-1,4 million barrels per day.
