Iraq Adds New Solar Power Plant Capacity

According to the Iraqi News Agency, the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced that 250 megawatts of solar energy projects will soon be added to Iraq’s electricity grid before the end of 2025.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Electricity for Production Affairs, Mohammed Nema, said, “The Ministry of Electricity considers investment in renewable energy to be key to achieving energy security in Iraq, reducing dependence on fossil fuels, and reducing carbon emissions. This contributes to supporting Iraq’s drive towards sustainable development and fulfilling its environmental commitments under the Paris Agreement.”

The official stated that the ministry has adopted a clear policy to diversify renewable energy sources, particularly solar energy, as a pivotal component of the national energy mix. He explained that this policy has resulted in practical implementation steps, such as the Shams Basra Solar Energy Project, implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Oil and Total, which aims to construct 1,000 megawatts in Basra.

He pointed out that the Ministry of Electricity is also working in cooperation with the Emirati company Masdar, where contracts have been signed for implementation and purchase of sites in the provinces of Dhi Qar, Muthanna, and Anbar. He added that there are other projects, such as the 750-megawatt solar energy project, which Established with funding from the investment budget.

The Ministry also signed a memorandum of understanding with the American company Ugee to establish solar power plants with a capacity of 3,000 megawatts. The Ministry aims to produce 12 megawatts of solar energy by 2030. The government has provided support to local and international investors to implement renewable energy projects, including facilitating land allocation, connecting plants to the national grid, and providing related tax exemptions.
